Now You See Me 3 has been in development for several years, following the release of the previous movie in 2016. Lionsgate has enlisted the talents of Eric Warren Singer, the Oscar-nominated writer of Top Gun: Maverick and American Hustle, to pen the script for the third installment.
Recently, it was announced that Ruben Fleischer, known for directing Venom and Uncharted, will be helming Now You See Me 3. Seth Grahame-Smith, the writer of The Lego Batman Movie, has joined the team to rewrite the script. Fleischer, a lifelong fan of heist movies, is excited about the endless possibilities of having magicians as the protagonists:
"I am a lifelong fan of heist movies - I love getting drawn in by the twists and the mystery where nothing is what it seems. And that’s even more true when the thieves are magicians - the opportunities are endless."
Production for Now You See Me 3 is set to begin in spring, as confirmed by Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake. If all goes according to plan, we can expect the movie to be released around fall 2025.
Who Will Return in Now You See Me 3?
Director Ruben Fleischer expressed his excitement about collaborating with Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson, stating that working with these talented actors, along with the incredible cast of the Now You See Me franchise, is a dream come true. This suggests that Eisenberg and Harrelson will be reprising their roles. Additionally, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, and Morgan Freeman are likely to make a comeback, considering the promise of the franchise's incredible cast returning.
Isla Fisher's character, Henley Reeves, was absent from Now You See Me 2 due to the actress's pregnancy. In her place, Lizzy Caplan portrayed the character Lula. It remains to be seen whether either or both of these female leads will return, but it is more likely for Lula to continue her journey after Henley left the group due to boredom.
Unfortunately, Michael Caine's Arthur Tressler is unlikely to make an appearance in the third installment, as the actor recently announced his retirement.
What Will Happen in Now You See Me 3?
Lionsgate has made it clear that Now You See Me 3 will be a reimagined take on the franchise. With Eric Warren Singer as the writer, the movie promises to take the mythology of Now You See Me to a whole new level. The President of Lionsgate, Nathan Kahane, mentioned that the film will surprise and engage the audience by introducing new tricks and illusions:
"The Now You See Me franchise has been built on keeping the audience surprised and guessing. Any great magician knows, you can’t keep doing the same tricks. And Eric and his team of illusionists have something special up their sleeve for this new film."
Expect a departure from the previous movies as the story explores the inner workings of The Eye, an ancient magical group. This opens the door to new magicians who will assist in an exciting heisting tale, alongside the key returning cast and new characters.
